This survey caught my attention and I feel it is important to share. Women Who Tech conducted a State of Women in Tech and Startups survey with 930 female respondents who work in the tech sector. The results are staggering. The bottom line is women continue to be harassed at alarming rates and they are barely raising a dime for their startups. According to the 2023 survey, 41% of women founders were harassed. Of these, 50% were propositioned for sex in exchange for funding. And it’s not just founders – 43% of female investors say they too have been harassed in business settings. Why do I know in my bones that this survey tells the truth? Because it happened to #metoo.

There are some major developments underway in Georgia. First, Atlanta is gaining a new life science/ R&D focused development district called Science Square. Located on 18 acres west of Georgia Tech’s campus, the development will be a mixed-use space catering to R&D-heavy companies. The first tenant will be Portal Innovations, a Chicago-based life sciences VC firm. Portal is bringing two things that local life science innovators say have been missing in the city: industry-specific venture capital and fully-equipped lab space. Portal raised $100 million earlier this year. Up next - David Cummings and Jon Birdsong, two Atlanta residents best known as Partners in Atlanta Ventures and Atlanta Tech Village have revealed plans to expand to an area of the city known as South Downtown, near Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the Gulch. Tennessee

Stuart C. McWhorter, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, commented that a recent study commissioned by his office validates what he had been feeling: Tennessee is behind many neighboring states in its investment in technology-based economic development (TBED). Titled Scaling Up . . . Benchmarking and Recommendations for Growing Tennessee’s Tech-Based Economy, the report shows that TN ranked 9th out of 10 neighboring states in TBED expenditures in FY23. Only Mississippi spent less money. Tennessee only appropriated $16M for TBED activities - compared to the next lowest state, South Carolina, at $28M. To match the funding from the top four peer states, Tennessee would need to appropriate $53.2M on an annual basis. Overall, Tennessee only invested $33 for every $1M in state GDP. Five of the other nine states invested more than $100 per $1M in GDP. Indiana ranked the highest with at $423 per $1M GDP.
